The 21 Best Guitar Practice Amps You Should Know About

Low wattage guitar practice amps are the new black! Forget those 100 watt amps that are louder than a college frat party and more back breaking than carrying a beer fridge. Amp makers have got the hint that not everyone is Slash and needs six Marshall stacks and a small army of roadies to lift them. The next wave of amps is small, clever, portable and inexpensive.

In the short history of electric guitars, the variety of amps today is staggering. Players have more options than in ever before. And the choices are tough as amp builders compete for our hard earned disposable income. There are now boutique, modelling, modular, mini stack and lunchbox amps to name a few. And on top of that throw in some techno babble like pentode, triode and Class A that only an uber guitar geek with a degree in electrical engineering could really love.

The Definitive Practice Amp

So here is a list of best small practice amps. These amps should be quite enough not to infuriate the neighbours. But most of these will fill a club or out saturate a heavy handed drummer. Lunchbox in size, boutique in vibe, very portable and extremely versatile these micro amps are huge on performance and easy on the wallet.

Before we begin lets set some criteria in place. First it must be low wattage no more than say 30 watts give or take. Secondly, it really should be a valve amp. Sure there are some capable solid state amps out there, but for the purpose of this exercise we’ll stick to the tube. And lastly if it’s a boutique amp it should be easily available. For the most part they shouldn’t be made in a Buddhist Temple in the Himalayas chanting a seven day mantra in C Harmonic Minor. There’s a mixture of modern and classic practice amps here to give a good old all round feel. OK so here we go in alphabetical order:
